THE ELIJA SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAM

FOR THOSE LEARNERS NOT ENROLLED IN THE ELIJA SCHOOL

The ELIJA School provides support, education and training to parents, family members, caregivers, and professionals. We also conduct private consultations within and outside the school's community. We host a regular workshop series at the school in the evenings. Click here to view the current schedule or to register. Click here to apply.

THE ELIJA SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAM CONSISTS OF THE FOLLOWING:

Supervision and Consultation

The ELIJA School Outreach  Supervisors meet regularly with families to devise goals and create individualized curriculum for home and/or school which address the management of behaviors, provide carry-over of skills learned at the school to the home and foster independence both in the home and in community settings. The ELIJA School Outreach Supervisors regularly attend IEP meetings and help the IEP committee develop appropriate goals and recommendations of services for each learner.

Direct 1:1 ABA Instruction

The ELIJA School Outreach Therapists provide direct instruction in the home and shadow learners at school and in the community utilizing the principles of ABA. The ELIJA School therapists receive ongoing comprehensive training in the most effective, scientifically-validated educational and treatment options available.

Parent Training

The ELIJA School outreach staff provide family training to address challenging behaviors in the home and community settings.

Professional Development and Workshops

The ELIJA School Outreach Supervisors provide trainings and conduct workshops serving school districts, schools and other organizations seeking training in ABA techniques and behavioral intervention plans. We also participate in local and national conferences to help disseminate valuable information about treatment options with other organizations that serve individuals with Autism.

Distance Consultation

The ELIJA School Outreach Supervisors travel to families outside the immediate area served by the ELIJA School to provide on-site supervision and training in ABA and to aid in the development and implementation of treatment plans. The frequency of on-site supervision is determined in consultation with the families and is supplemented with frequent phone consultations.

Advocacy and Referral

The ELIJA School assists families in their efforts to advocate for appropriate services for their children with Autism. In addition, the ELIJA School can provide information on, and referrals to a wealth of resources helpful to individuals with Autism and their families.

Psychological Evaluations

The ELIJA School Outreach Program provides autism diagnostic evaluations. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong complex neurological disorder that impairs a person’s ability to communicate and interact socially.  It is also associated with unusual and/or repetitive behaviors or interests.  The symptoms and severity of symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder vary greatly.  Many children are often misdiagnosed or diagnosed later in life when intervention is critical.  Research indicates that early intervention in an appropriate educational setting can result in significant improvements for many young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.   Parents often have concerns about their child’s development before they are diagnosed and are welcome to call in order to determine whether additional assessment is warranted.  Autism assessments include in-depth parent and teacher (if available) interviews, review of child’s records, psychological testing and assessment, and the administration of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule.  In addition to Autism diagnostic evaluations, we also conduct psychological evaluations to children and adolescents who are experiencing behavioral, emotional, and learning problems.  All evaluations consist of an informing conference and written report.  Recommendations are provided along with referrals as needed.

Speech & Language Evaluations

The ELIJA School Outreach Program also provides Speech & Language Evaluations.  The Speech-Language Pathologist will work cohesively with the psychologist in order to provide the most comprehensive evaluation.  Autism Spectrum Disorder impairs one’s ability to understand receptive language and communicate with others; appropriate social interactions are also a key deficit in the disorder.  A comprehensive speech-language evaluation would assess the areas of receptive and expressive language, speech skills and social interaction.  The speech-language pathologist will gather information via parent report, observation/informal assessment as well as formal assessment.  Testing materials will be chosen as appropriate based on the needs of the individual.  The evaluation will include a conference as well as a formal written report.  Recommendations and referrals will be made as appropriate.
